The Red, in Tx/Ok at least, has paddlefish and shovelnose sturgeon. On the uncool fish side, there are more red shiners than you can shake a stick at.

What kind fish are in the Dallas/Red River area?
I found this very nice Texas freshwater fishes site (scroll down).

Laid out by drainages or species. Would have been a good resource when I planned my last east Texas collecting trip.

What do you mean "uncool"??? I loves the shiners!!
No, no, no that's not what I said... I'm a Cyprinid nut. Red Shiners are one our native invader types. THey are extremely competative, especially in degraded systems, and are very closely related to some of our endemics, and are thus a threat to their pops because of hybridization. It is my love of minnows that gives Reds the uncool status in my book. They are a pretty aquarium fish, though, if that's what you're in to.

I didn't even think about that sort of relationship. Glad to see some others here that love minnows, I am surprised at how often our talk of native fish turns into a talk of sunfish and pickerel... when there are so many really cool minnows and darters out there that do so well in aqariums.
