I'm wanting to set up a large tank (300gal) with some bowfin in it. I was hoping to get them small and then enjoy growing them up. I really don't know that much about them (aggressive, sexual differences, tankmates), but want to learn as much as possible before I get them.

I have heard that the males get really aggressive when adult, but the young enjoy being in schools. They like weeds, a lot. They'll eat just about anything, dead or alive, and the tankmates would have to be roughly the same size. Gars work really well because they occupy the top, while bowfin stay in the middle or bottom. They need room to come up to the surface and gulp air, so do gar.
