Just wondering what type of shiner/minnow I could keep in a 2.5 gallon tank. I would like to keep a couple, but I don't think any would be suitable in such a small tank.

Let me know if you have any and what type.

Thanks

I don't think any minnows would work. Maybe least killifish (Heterandria formosa). You'd be better off stocking it with inverts, though.

Minnows, probably not. I would try some H. formosa(least killie/livebearer) or pygmy killies(not sure on scientific name?). You might could get away with a pair of bluefin killies or pygmy sunfish. If you add any of those fish, they like lots of plants, so load it with java moss and other bushy plants. I would add some dwarf crays as inverts. You could try triops or fairy shrimps, but I'm not sure how they do with fish.

If you're a member of a local aquarium club you might find someone with Heterandria formosa to spare. They are pretty popular with the Nano tank crowd and they are prolific.

H. formosa are usually available on aquabid or Sach's Aquaculture. Some of the other vendors may have them also.

I must be doing something wrong. I've seen one fry since I got mine like six months ago and that's it.

I read somewhere that to really be productive these fish need a long photoperiod. I had the same problem as you and once I started leaving the lights on longer they started reproducing more.

These guys pretty much only get natural light where they're at and whatever reflects from the other tanks once the sun goes down. So perhaps they'll start reproducing more now that we're moving towards summer. Thanks for the info!
