Conservation Symposium Series
Keeping Current: Stream Ecology, Conservation & Restoration
Friday, September 5, 2008
http://www.cmnh.org/...nSymposium.aspx

The Fifth-Annual Conservation Symposium at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History
Presented by The Cleveland Museum of Natural History Conservation Symposium Series

Rivers and streams are the lifeblood of a region’s ecological systems. When they are of high-quality, they help maintain the health of local habitats. Rivers and streams also impact the quality of human life, and are themselves affected by human activity. This year’s symposium will explore what’s going right with the conservation of rivers and streams in our region and what challenges we presently face. Talks will be presented for the layperson with an interest in conservation.

This year's event will feature morning and afternoon keynote addresses. University of Michigan professor Dr. David Allan, author of "Streams: Their Ecology and Life," will present an overview of river ecosystems and how human activity threatens them. Naturalist Giff Beaton, author of "Dragonflies and Damselflies of Georgia and the Southeast," will discuss how overall stream health affects local dragonfly populations.

Also featuring breakout sessions on a variety of topics pertaining to stream ecology, including:

Endangered & Threatened species
Invasive species
Watershed conservation
Riparian corridors
Dams
Floods
Channelization
Conservation Symposium Field Trips
Join us on Thursday afternoon, September 4 and Saturday morning, September 6 for field trips to various locations along the region’s many watersheds. Also on September 4, we will offer an optional daylong workshop on the Headwater Habitat Evaluation Index and an evening cruise on the Cuyahoga River (both events require additional fees).

Conservation Education Award
In conjunction with the Museum’s annual Conservation Symposium, the Museum honors a local teacher involved with conservation education. Nominate a teacher today!

I'll be there. Looks like it should be a good conference. I went to the wetland one a couple years ago.

Are you doing any of the field trips?

I am not sure if I personally will be conducting a field trip, but my supervisor is leading a canoe trip on Thursday. I am going to be asking my supervisor if I can help him. We are trying to get approval to attend the conference on Friday. I am pretty sure that we will be there. I have heard that this symposium is going to be excellent. It is a great price. Hopefully I will see you there.

One of the leaders on the canoe trip, Dan Best, is a good guy and I am sure that trip will be fun.

You can see me before then if you want to get out on the water and do some seining as I want to get out with someone that knows fish better than I and it looks like Tom Glassburner doesn't post here anymore.

I wish I could go! Some of the field trips really interest me. The keynote address also sounds fascinating. Sigh. Maybe next time.

There is going to be a fish seining trip on Thursday Sept 4th. I am going to talk to my supervisor this week about the canoe trip, if he does not need me for that I think I will be going to look for fish :smile2:

I think that the seining will take place on the Grand River near one of the Cleve. Mus land holdings.

Send me a PM and we can set up a time to net some fish. I stay really close to the Harpersfield Dam on the Grand River during the week (Mon to Thur).

If any one can attend this symposium I highly suggest they go. You can not beat a $15.00 price tag for all that you get and the talks are going to be great.

I have not heard from Tom Glassburner for a while, I talked to him about 2-3 months ago and he got a new job and was really busy with that. I will try to email him again today.
