Hi everyone,
As many of you know, I'm the aquarist at Bass Pro Shops in Rossford, OH. One of my favorite things about the job is educating the public about our native fishes. Twice a week, I give presentations there and talk about the fish in our aquarium. That is followed by a feeding demonstration. The kids love it, and that's important. I try to be as imformative as possible while presenting, but also keep it fun for the kids. To aide me in informing the public, I've prepared an educational binder that is on display in front of our aquarium. Each page of the book highlights a specific species of fish found in the aquarium. Here's a picture of what the binder looks like on its podium in front of the tank.

As you might be able to tell from the pictures, the species profile consists of the fish's name, a photo, a distribution map, and some interesting facts about the fish. (I tried to relate the facts to "fishing facts" being that we are Bass Pro). The reason why I'm informing everyone here is because I'd like to thank some of the Nanfa members here for helping with the production of the binder. Namely teleost, smbass, and fritz, donated photographs for use in the book. I'll attach the pages their photos were used on. Also, I've included Nanfa in a "thank you" section at the back of the binder. I'll attach that as well.

I've recently been approved to create these binders for the other Bass Pro stores. The next one I'll be working on is the one for Cincinnati. After that, I'll turn my attention to Bollingbrook, IL and Gurnee, IL. I know for the Cincinnati store, I'm going to need a good photograph of a Hybrid Striped Bass. If anyone has a photo that they'd like to share for the creation of this next binder, please PM me.

Thank you, and I hope you all enjoy.

-Nate

I felt it was especially prudent to construct this binder because I was sent a standard issue poster that depicts gamefish and it was hung next to the exhibit. Out of the 40 or so fish on the poster, my aquarium features less than half of them. So, the poster really doesn't do our visitors any favors.

I've seen the binder, and it's awesome! One day when I have time, I'm going to go in there and park myself in front of it and read it through. It's much better than a poster.

If I were you, Nate, I'd put my name on each page. In fine print at the bottom, something like, "Nate Tessler, Copyright 2008" or "Nate Tessler for Bass Pro Shops, Copyright 2008." When I make something, I like to mark my territory.

I'm almost speechless Nate. That looks really nice and thanks for giving so much recognition and credit to NANFA.

Thank you, Susan. A few people have mentioned that to me...the thing about putting my name more prominently in the binder. Most of the photographs are mine, so my name appears throughout. Then on the final page, I believe I give myself some credit, I don't remember though. I think I might have to look into how you actually "copyright" something however.

Making Uland almost speechless, that's a compliment I enjoy! Thanks again for taking the time to get such a good shot of a fish that I feel isn't photographed in such a setting due to its usual large size.

Great idea, my local BPS also has the same poster you speak of with many fish they don't have and without many fish they do have.

Great work, Nate! I hope the Nashville Bass Pro will get you to make a book for their tank. It would help if they at least quit calling their blue cat a channel cat.

By the way, any creative property is automatically copyrighted- however, if it is work-for-hire, as might be considered the case here, your employer owns the copyright.

Thanks! I do bet that Bass Pro Shops is entitled to the copyright then...Tennessee is up there on the list. Probably won't see anything until the summer though when I've got a little more time. School is beating me up right now.
