Minnow Trap Theft

How should one conceal and secure large minnow traps in shallow, publically accessible streams where theft might be an issue?
I don't know about where you live (maybe you should update your profile to include it, so we don't have to guess), but in Pennsylvania you are required to put your name, address, and phone number on minnow traps if you leave them unattended. This might not prevent theft by a truly dishonest person, but the person who picks it up thinking it to be abandoned or lost will probably leave it alone if he sees it has an owner who intends to return for it.
I have pondered this too. I have been tempted to leave it in the Youghiogheny River for a weekend. But I have not tried it yet. So I will be interested in the answers that may come also.

Will the trap itself be visible through the water?
One variety (silver funnel-type traps) may well be, but the other (black Promar crab traps) should hopefully be a little less conspicuous.

Sorry about that. Just to clarify, I'll be using these in Puerto Rico. Representative stream photos can be seen here, here, and here.

Interesting. I never saw anything like that before. How big is the opening? They would not be legal here in Pennsylvania if the opening is larger than an inch.

What really ticks me off is often people will pull in my traps take the baitfish and leave everything else in it on the shore to die. Usually this is my target species in the first place.... Mudpuppies.
