Uhhhh, I said that there is no such things as hybrids. :-D That is my story and I am sticking to it. :-& #036;

The body shape and coloration looks like a pumpkinseed to me but the face looks more like a green, especially the mouth but even the gill cover looks more like a green's than a pumpkinseed's. A pumpkin/green hybrid perhaps?

to me that definately looks like a bluegill x green sunfish these things occur naturally where ever the two are found and are hachery produced. I agree that greens seem so spawn with just about anything else in their genus, and with warmouth if they are not in lepomis. I need to get some better pics of the so called "greengills" I have seen a lot of them but yet only have two bad pics of them... since these came from a stream too I'm not 100% sure even if thats definately what they are. In addition to bluegill and greens there are orangespots in the area but no other lepomis present.

Those certainly look like greengills to me.

I usually catch pumpkingreens, or greenseeds if you'd rather, during the summer. If I can get some shots of those I will post them. Very pretty fish. Sad thing, the one pond they used to be found in pretty regular is nearly dried up. Some of it is drought, I think most of its irrigation nearby. Other ponds a mile or so away are fine in level.

Pumpkingreens are one of the most common hybrids around this area. They are also very aggressive and bite readily. This transfers to the aquarium. Think greens are good at dominating a tank, try one of these guys. They eat anything, had one in biology class, it ate most items from peoples lunch. Gummi worms and baloney sandwich pieces were it's favorite. I gave him the name tank, since he became huge and bulky after killing off all competition and eating all that junk food. The incredible bulk was a second choice for a name. :)

The dorsal and anal fins are much to dark to nail down the field mark of the greenie. The mouth in my opinion looks like a greenie but lacks the blue barring on the operacle or gill what ever that part is. The greenie has that teltale blue baring does he not. Well lets just say I know he does. This one seems to lack that field mark also. The body looks to be a combo but more like a pumpkin. And about the hybrids not existing. Live and learn. Mostly learn. :lol: Hard to show emotion in writing but I do believe and have seen hybrids. Sorry Irate no offense. But guess what. Some day this fish might die. My conclusion. A pumpkinseed with a loud mouth.

Just to clarify things, I never said hybrids don't exist. I said that a lot of the fish you guys are claiming are hybrids, are not. Sunfishes are highly variable fishes, and just because they don't conform to the standards you are used to seeing doesn't automatically mean they are hybrids.
