I found this site in reply to a question on another forum. I am building a 8'Lx4'Dx2'H Plywood tank. How many grass or chain pickerel can I put in there. Will they breed and if so where can I find more info on this? Has anyone had any luck with getting them off live food? And where can I get some (no hybrids please) when the tank is done? Thanks in advance for any help!

I've tried hard to find grass pickerel but found redfin pickerel. This site helped me find a store in florida. I love this species.

I wouldnt get a chain pickeral, they get way to big. I think some grass pickeral would be cool though. I would probably only get about 2 of them, so you could have some other fish. i dont know much about pickeral in your area but im sure there is someone hear from NC that can help you. If you dont wanna catch them heres a place that sells grass, redfin, and chain pickeral- My link The post above me also has a good place to buy them.
Good luck

I have no experience with pickerel, but I had a young N. Pike a while back that learned to eat whatever I dropped in the tank, as long as it was moving across the surface or sinking. I dropped them in one at a time and he would tear into it. It had to be a decent size too. i started with cubes of a fish fillet, but larger pieces of other things worked too. I had a rock bass in the tank with him too that learned to eat pellets and stuff, and the pike may have learned to do that from him after getting hungry enough. Best of luck!

Id say with grass pickerel you could keep 4-6 no problem, 8 or 9 would be the most I would think. For chain pickerel 1 or 2 would be alright, 3 would be pushing it.

Awesome! Thanks for the quick replys! I will post up some pics when the tank gets under way. Saving up and buying some materials now. I will probably try to keep 4 or 5 grass pickerels then. I would really like to try and breed them. Not for money or anything but just to see if I can do it. If and when I can end up breeding them if anyone would be interested just let me know. But that is probably a LONG way off just giving everyone a heads up as to what I will be trying.

4 or 5 will give them a good amount of space, and you have room to add tankmates which is always good :cool2:
