I think the question would be, "what constitutes a good community fish for platies". Really, just about any ole shiner or darter will do OK with them.Any community fish would be good.

Actually platies are North American Natives...They are from Mexico.

Depends on species, but usually brownish gray with highlights.

The "pretty" ones you see in stores are actually hybrid swordtail, Platy and variatus.
I really do not think there is a "pure" hobby strain that is not a hybrid of some sort
