White Sturgeon

I've seen these guys suck up stocked rainbow trout like cheap ramen, and was wondering if anybody has ever fished for these prehistoric barbeled fish.

I've fished for sturgeon in San Francisco bay, I'm not sure if they were green or white but I think both species are found there. We used live grass shrimp or sculpins as bait. I've heard that Sturgeon are a lot more predatory than most people give them credit for, bottom feeder doesn't equal non predator. The Chinese paddlefish is a dedicated piscavore and our own paddlefish will eat things much larger than plankton if given a chance. My dad who runs a fishing boat that goes after sturgeon occasionally uses chunks of fresh oily fish to catch them, I'm not sure of the species. Sturgeon are like most fishes, if it fits in their mouths they will eat it!

Apparently, they throw their lips forward so fast they just vaccumm up the prey item, whether it is a worm or a pike or carp. Paddlefish eating fish AND plankton? I learned something today! :biggrin:

How do you distinguish between eating, as in preying upon, and having something it go into your mouth concurrent with the behavior of opening mouth wide and swimming through the water?

Wouldn't actively pursuing clouds of free swimming crustaceans, insect larvae and schools of small fish qualify? It would seem unlikely that Paddlefish just randomly swim with out knowing if their is prey in the water or not. Unless the plankton is everywhere too much energy would be expended on filtering water with nothing in it. Possibly someone who is an expert could tell us the size of the prey items paddlefish filter out. I am pretty sure they cannot live on green water or similarly sized organisms. Chinese paddle fish are active piscavores, they eat larger fishes, their mouth structure is quite different from the American paddlefish.
