I need some serious and very willing to get dirty people for doing some heavy seineing and sampling in the Detroit river and Particularly the canals and Lagoons on Belle Isle. This data will go to the Habitat restoration efforts along the New Detroit river international wildlife refuge. A big push is needed for 2007 and I want to start sampling ASAP for special concern, threatened, and endangered species.

Please contact me at Rkik@detroitzoo.org if interested and willing to give a helping hand to this project.

Bob Hrabik here with the Missouri Department of Conservation. Have you ever heard of the Missouri Trawl? It is a great gear for catching rare fishes in large, deep, and swift rivers. Talk to me if interested in having me and our group come to the Detroit River.

I saw this trawl in operation at the convention and it definately caught a lot of smaller benthic species out of deep water where the US fish and wildlife trawl didn't come close to in diversity. It may be quite useful. I am within a couple hours of you and may be able to give you some help and definately don't mind difficult sampling conditions.

I think your habitat restoration study should be the subject of one of the Great Lakes Alliance trips in early to mid 2007. It may be a purely conservation related trip, or some collecting may be done too, I don't know. If collecting can be done, that would be a bonus, but regardless, we should consider this for a group outing. After all, one on NANFA's goals is to promote conservation. Let us know when you need us.

sounds good to me, I would be willing to come a couple of times though between now and the end of may. Not sure after that where I will be living.

Bob,
I would very much like to try out this technique and equipment in the Detroit river. From what I hear it is just what we need here for the detection of our harder to sample fishes, Particularly those fish in the area that are T&E and are very difficult to sample using traditional techniques due to depth ,substrate, and water characteristics.

I'll contact you shortly by E-mail so we can further discuss this as it will need a bit different permitting than I have currently to conduct.

I think your habitat restoration study should be the subject of one of the Great Lakes Alliance trips in early to mid 2007.

I was going to bring this up as soon as I got things figured out and identified specific transects. I very much need people that are willing to jump into the water and catch fish. Two or three outings where I can get alot of people in the water, all day long, is really whats needed. I have no schedule yet but this will be popping up soon. In addition to the Fish work anyone with Herp experiance I NEED YOU TOO !!!!!!

I can do frogs prety well and can id some tadpoles but need to do a little more studying on them. I also did a lot of work at some powerplants on the detroit river for the past year. We actualy started a continuation of this work yesterday that will be going on through spring. I was the ID person for all the fish we got at 5 plants. NateTessler13 is working on the same project I think he was at either river rouge or trenton channel yesterday. I won't be doing as much this time around but will be going to the plants occasionally. just out of curiosity are there any particular michigan E and T species your looking for? We did come up with quite a few northern madtoms at some of the plants. They made me recheck the id to be sure they wern't brindleds because I suspect the northerns cost the plants a lot more because of their status.

oh ya and nate nice on the mudpuppy, you should see quite a few more. I think we got as many as 18 the collection net at once one time. They are definately pretty cool animals.

Northern Madtoms are one of them. I usually find two or three a year. If you run across these fish and can provide photos I highly suggest submitting them to the Michigan Natural Features Inventory. Accurate data on just where these fish are at is nil. Any documentation of them is valuable.

Brindled madtom are Special concern and also a fish I'm looking for. Darters of all type including the channel are extremely rare in the upper Detroit river area. I know we have Mooneye in the area from historical collection, however, none have been seen in decades.

Mudpuppies: Where did you get the Mudpuppies at? I ask this because we are currently doing a survey and distrubution study of mudpuppies in the upper Detroit river. Alot of Mudpuppies from 5 inches to 15 inches have been Pit tagged for re-capture in the area of Belle Isle. Please if you catch any around the area contact me.

Yes, please do e-mail me at robert.hrabik@mdc.mo.gov to talk more about arrangements and what it wil take to be successful at trawling in the Detroit River for rare fishes (and other aquatic creatures).

I will be away from e-mail and the internet during the T-giving Holiday.

Eat some turkey!

We're at Trenton Channel and River Rouge, we get mudpuppies every week. Sometimes 6-8 in a day. Some are at least 12 inches long.

Ah yes I know the area well......Interesting stuff down there....See any spotted gars by chance in that location recently?

As for just a quick update on this sampling project.
I have obtained permits from MDNR to conduct this and am working on the planing at the moment as well as clearing up a few other issues such as access permissions, alternative funding etc. A detailed schedule is in the making for at least four days next year where intensive sampling will be conducted in specific areas. I'm always out here though so I plan on many smaller scale sampling days as well. If someone could drop by COOL....we will hit the water whenever.

Bob if you read this:
I have not contacted you yet as I wanted to make sure I got all the permitting straight first. I'll be in touch very soon with you about this.

Richard

A lot of difficulty has occurred with getting a day for an all out sampling of the area this year but I'll be damned if I do not use my permit this year...If anyone happens to have a weekend (or weekday) available to come over, Let me know and I'll make myself available..This is usually easy as the sample location is my place of work...

I really need to sample and inventory several locations this year and can't do it all myself...
PM me if you have a day to stop by...Anyday usually will work....
