Really cool fish. What is their aggression level? Would they be suitable tankmates with bowfins?

Well mine seems to be pretty laid back, but I have not yet tested his territorial tendencies yet. I woould like to add a rock bass or something to see what the reaction is.
Once the lights go out he cruises all over the tank, so if his tankmate is asleep and is smaller than he is, I would imagine he will eat it at night, even if he displays no aggression during the day (he did ignore some shiners for a while).

An interesting note about burbots (from what I remember from The Freshwater Fishes of Manitoba): as they get older, they become more "lazy" and will ignore smaller fish and just try to get one big one instead of many small ones. A 40cm burbot was caught once with a 30cm walleye in his belly. That information makes it hard to predict compatibility. I would still rate the burbots aggression very very low compared to other fish I have had.

I have heard that bowfin are quite aggressive, so I would assume the bowfin would be top dog in the tank. tough call, I have no experience with bowfin

Gorgeous fish. Doubt I could get my hands on one down here so I guess I'll settle for bowfin.

yeah I'm always being jealous of places that have colorful sunfish and killifish and rainbow darters. I seem to live in the "drab belt" of native fish. But a burbot is sure great to look at. I really like the leopard pattern to them, and their odd appearance. I know people who would kick them in the head to get them to let go of their lure, or even cut the line because it's "as ugly as a catfish or eel" .

I'm sure learning a lot about these guys. Mine uses his head like a shovel, he bends it down under stuff and rolls it over. Never had a fish that could bend his neck like that before. Except darters.

I'm still jealous of the colorful, and seemingly more diverse american fish...

I would pick a fish with personality any day over a pretty one. I can hang a picture on the wall of a pretty fish! If I'm going to take care of it, I want it to be interesting.

I agree but pretty and personality is a good combo.

personality + unusual + ruggedly slimy good looks = even better combo.

I've had exotics with no personality, just airheads that swim, and I have had a darter with more personality than my last lizard.

My darters don't have much personality at all. My sucker has more personality than them all combined.

I have a single darter in a tank with loads of puppy dogish personality. The other two darters are in a mixed tank and are less interactive.

I have come across one of these guys before very agressive, had nothing better to do and was catching stickle back on a sabiki rig, was reeling up a stickle back and a burbot came up with it tore the stickleback in half. Caught half a stickleback and the burbot.
