Just some picture updates of the fish. The plants are growing slowly – I am thinking it is because the water hovers in the high 50 to low 60’s.

Bull male Northern Longear. I thought he might grow bigger but when I transferred him into this tank I measured him at a full 5”. Probably about max size. He is the only one in the tank. I would like a female for him eventually.

Here is a large part of the minnow school. Redside Dace, Spotfin Shiner, a Central Stoneroller that has grown huge and digs holes all over my planted section, Silverjaw Minnow, Fathead Minnow, Blacknose Dace and an old Fantail Darter.

Another minnow group shot. Many of the same fish but with a Rosyface Shiner trio at the top.

Redside Dace and Sand Shiner.

My favorites - The Darters.

The little Rainbow was added as a miniature and the other one of this size was eventually eaten by the Longear. This one has over doubled in size and starting to show some color (the big bull rainbows wouldn’t come out for pictures). There is also a Banded Darter and a Variegate head.

One of my favorite darter is the Blackside. Here is a pair with the Banded.

The large male. Love this fish when he turns nearly black.

Aside from two store bought fathead minnows (meant as sunfish food and cycling) this is the only fish I didn’t personally catch. The Riebe Special – a large male Variegate Darter.

For the record. I have a new appreciation for those that take great intank shots. I had to do ALOT of post processing and take alot of pictures and I am not really happy with any of them.

I'm impressed, Andy, that's a serious community tank of natives.

I'm with Bruce, you don't get much more authentic than that! Great pictures and awesome setup. I bet the majority of your fish think they are still in the local creeks and streams.

Well, Mr. Andy, your tank is awesome! I can't believe I never posted any comments before. But you have a very nice, natural stream setup, and excellent fish. That background is impressive and is getting me thinking...

Beautiful tank Andy. Do you have trouble with the finer sand blowing around in high current?
I don't know why I didn't notice before that the squirrel in your den seems to be making a gesture to the snake in the cage below.

Fundulus, glad you enjoyed. I can't wait till spring comes and I can add a few more species I am interested in having. And maybe getting some more Vallisineria that will grow!

Blake, I'll be interested to see as your project as it gets furthur along.

UncleWillie, glad you enjoyed. I hope you get inspired to try something similiar.

Mike, I did have trouble with it, but all the powerhead outputs are located about 2-3 inches above the sand and are slightly upturned. Also, it is mostly a gravelly sand in the rapid section, but yet it does move around and I constantly have to tweak it to keep it from piling up. But it usually creates an equalibrium and the sand stays down.

BT, glad you enjoyed. I have read alot of your accounts and I had better plant success like you have.

Lozgod, glad you enjoyed the pictures. I am not too happy with them, but I had to mess around with them ALOT in PS and, at least on the computer I am working on now, they look too dark but my home computer they seemed light.

Andy, I know this is a really old thread but just was looking through it wondering if you still have this tank going and if you have any recent photos of it...

Brian, I guess the link to the update has been posted. Today's version is hand-numbing COLD (tank sits right around 52F). I think all my Vals went into winter dormancy and are non-existent at the moment. Since there is very little plant biomass taking up nutrients and light I have a VERY nice selection of algae. Hopefully the plants bounce back when it warms up.
