Funnel Type minnow/killie trap

I grew up in an area with lots of banded killies. Bread worked fine in a minnow trap. Always like a pound of killies in the trap. We caught a stickle back once and a mudminnow another time. I bought a trap today and caught nothing. Whats a good choice of bait to atract a variety of minnows and juvi fish?

Of all the bait I tried only one was effective regularly.

I tried a variety of dry dog and cat food and dried shrimp and only got a bullhead, i tried bread and only got a sucker.

Then a bait shop owner gave me a scoop of Gravy Train brand dog food. Every time I used it I caught tons of golden shiners, bullheads, and pumpkinseeds. Using it in streams got me fallfish too. It worked every time and once I had FOURTY goldens in a single trap using it.

Sadly the gravy train has run out and I cannot find small bags of it anywhere. I do not want to buy a jumbo sized bag just for fish bait.

For some reason the "makes its own gravy when wet" gimmick worked wonderfully as a fish attractant.

I never heard of using gravy train, i'll have to give it a try. I always had good luck using beef liver.

John,

I have used these traps for several years, with and without bait. Now it is very rare that I use bait. If I put out 10 traps probably 7-8 will have something in it and 1 or 2 will have several to a lot. Most of the time it is some type of shinnner or chub, but madtom's, darters and suckers are not uncommon. Generally if you can fish them overnight (24 hours) you will have better luck (I do).

Yeah, I was thinking about the overnight deal. I work 2nd shift. So I could throw it in around midnight and pick it up in the mourning.

A good friend of mine told me that he uses Subways Italian sub with everything on it. He eats half and puts half in his traps and leaves the traps overnight. Says that with all the different juices from the bread, meat and veggies he collects a lot of different fish. I have not tried it personally but I am hopeing to later this summer.
