Went in the field today looking for gar and bowfin. The water is the floodplain, and I think the fish are too. We did not see any gar or bowfin surfacing. We only used hook and line, and only one small freshwater drum was caught.

Better luck next time

Looking good there Sean. Did your wife do the trimming, and how did that drum taste. Had a great time down in Louisiana. Take Care.

Went gillnetting and light trapping last night

Spotted gar in holding tank, awaiting histo sampling.

Tried to keep this one alive, but the gillnet was too much for it.

No larval fish in the light traps, but my fish love these little inverts. Caught tons last night

Thanks, even though the larval fish have not shown up yet this year I have been keeping my picky eaters fat.

The traps are made of acrylic squares for the top and bottom with acrylic pipe to funnel the fish in. There is a tube to put a chemical light stick in the middle to attract the fish. I will post some try and post some pics.

Yep, he is in freshwater now and was caught in freshwater. They can live out of water for a long time, especially if kept cool.

I've caught them frequently in the Delaware River near Chester, PA and also some of the purely freshwater tributaries in Delaware County, PA. When I was a kid I thought it was the strangest thing seeing blue crabs in the creek (and lots of them), miles from the Delaware River and many miles from salt water.

Fished the close rigs today with lackluster results. Caught lots of reds, but we were too far out to keep them. The snapper were either too small or out of season and there were wat too many hardheads. It was still a blast.
