and eggs of what ? gar ?? shad ??
That fish reminded me of a Bantam X Redspotted

It is a funny looking fish looking at that photo. I'll just guess that it's that particular photo.

That's why I love this forum - I never knew until now that fish eggs are phototropic!

I see in the photo a tinsnip, a wood chisel ...and tweezers? What the hell are the tweezers good for? Finishing the rough edges, maybe?
They are for pulling otoliths.

I think it's a really colored up male bantam, the bigger ones are redspotteds.
I don't know about the eggs, they were too big to be shad eggs. They were the right size to be gar eggs, but we have not seen any gar that were spawned out yet. We caught a bunch of Ichthyobus in the gill nets that night, but I don't know what their eggs look like.

Both of them are common at this site, and they both appeared to be in breeding mode when I was there.

Shame on you for disrepecting a good chisel! A cheap pocket knife or box cutter will do the messy work. As for the tweezers - yeah, OK.They are for pulling otoliths.

We need heavy duty tools when working up over 50 fish per night.
