I learned something new yesterday. Dace are very good jumpers. I had gone out at lunchtime to do some quick collecting mainly to catch a few Eastern Black Nosed Daces. I caught a few of them as well as 2 baby Eastern Kilifishes and a baby crayfish(O.limosus). I put them in a container in a closed room with an aerator which meant leaving the container open. I had checked in on them a couple of times and they were doing fine but when I went to leave for the day there were no Daces in the container. They had jumped out and were dead on the floor. I'll know better next time. That may explain why there are 2 Daces missing out of my main tank. I had gone on vacation and left one of the lids open for the automatic fish feeder to dispense food. I thought one of my crays may have eaten them but now I'm going to have to go home and look for any dead fish around the tank that may have flopped their way under something.

I think "dace jumped out" is the second most often repeated topic on the NANFA forum, after "what kind of sunfish is this?". Welcome to the crispy dace club; I think most of us here are members. If you have a hang-on fliter with a spillway chute, then plastic needlepoint screen from a craft store is great for making a fence where the water enters. Since dace live in riffles, the filter return spillway is a natural place to jump.

I have several blacknose dace. I've never had a problem with jumpers, but I have a powerhead for current near the bottom of the tank. They play in that current rather than the current from hang-on filter.

I have an open topped tank with a 7 inch "fence" around it to cut down on jumpers. I've had dace jump out over that. I've found that they jump worse when I first get them. I need to cover the tank for a week or two until they get used to it, then they settle down and stay in the tank.

I find a powerhead helps me as well. dace and fallfish are both jumpers. A powerhead cuts down on it immensely.

I've got 2 in the tank for added circulation but I turned them off a while back. Maybe I'll turn one back on. Thanks for the advice.
