I caught a tiny rock bass while sampling earlier today. I noticed something odd about it. It's eyes were not red!
How common is this in rockbass? do their eyes start out white and turn red as they grow older?
Maybe it is the poster fish for visine.

I think it will probably turn red as it grows, looks like a YOY by the size

With rock bass males have red eyes & female has orange eyes. I dont know at what age you can tell.

Are they present that far north? (Assuming they were netted near location next to OPs name)
They're found in my area in southeast Missouri and much further south. They are prevalent here.
I used to live in the southern portion of Ohio and I was under the impression they weren't present there or further north.

Every small rock bass or shadow bass, about the size of yours, that I've netted has not had red eyes. They will also change eye color due to stress, especially the juveniles.
