Hello,

I apologize if this website has been reference already, but I came across this link when researching angling tactics for various rough fish species. This one is tailored to gar.

There's also a link to a book I think I'll be ordering called, "Fishing For Buffalo, A Guide to the Pursuit and Cuisine of Carp, Suckers, Eelpout, Gar, and Other Rough Fish" by Rob Buffler and Tom Dickson.

Just thought I'd share with fellow rough fish enthusiasts.

I fly fish for spotted and alligator Gar in south Louisiana. For the smaller spotted gar I use big poppers or dalhberg divers ranging from 12-10 in size. For the bigger alligator gars I use big streamer flies size 10 and up. The thing about fishing for gar is that most of the time they don't swallow their prey immediately. They bite initially with great force but it takes them a bit to actually swallow the bait. If you're using live bait or treble hooked baits you'll be at an advantage as with live bait gar will continue to eat the bait after initially taking it and with treble hooks... well I don't think I need to explain that one. Gars also have extremely hard mouths and are prone to violent evasive maneuvers once hooked. I have a few flies that I keep extra sharp specifically to sink into the hard mouths of gar
