I'd like to do some collecting near Raleigh if anyone would like to go. I've got a 4' cast net and a small seine (no clue what to do with it) as well as a minnow trap and dip net. I'm pretty inexperienced at collecting fish with anything other than rod and reel, but I'd love to get an education  . Give me a heads up if you're interested. I'm available every Sunday, plus some weekday evenings.

I know its a bit chilly outside, but if we can catch fish, I'm game.

I'd be up for some, but probably not until it warms up a bit more!

Cheers

Warm Up???? JohnO and I have been out and had to remove ice from the surface to collect fish!! Insulated pants/shirt and waterproof insulated gloves is all you need. It's crazy when you pull your net out of the water and it freezes nearly instantly.

.......ok, so I haven't been out in the cold yet either this year, but I would if the opportunity came along.

Reminds me of opening day of trout when I lived in PA. Some years we'd still have snow and ice and you have to keep chipping ice off the rod eyes. Good times!!

June 10 (a Friday) the Raleigh Aquarium Society has a collecting trip scheduled as part of their annual conference. (Thats 3 weeks after our NANFA conference in VA). That's a looong way off so we might do something sooner too, maybe around March. I'll keep you posted.

I will probably be driving to Concord to visit family within the next 3 months or so. I would be happy to meet up for a few hours on a sunday on my way back up to VA. I will shoot you a PM when I know what my plans will be :)

How'bout

so cold that the ice grows larger on your net
while it is in the water?

Notice that the ice has formed round balls.

I miss those days too mike. Since I moved to the city I dont go on opening day here. Its all shoulder to shoulder and everyones rude or trying to snag the palomino's in the face so it looks like it was a legit catch & theres no fish commissioner around to report them. And I'd get arrested for tossing the explanative in the stream for doing it.

I know what you mean. I hated fishing crowded areas, having to get there the night before to get a good spot, etc. I preferred fishing at our family cabin in Potter County where there are more like 10 anglers every half mile or so as opposed to 10 every 50':

I'm getting the urge to go out too, I have to get my 2011 fishing license and I'll be off for my usual lunchtime adventures.

Let me know when and where. This cold snap has given me cabin fever.
