Job Description: Project title: Quantification of the success and potential impacts of new rock ramp fish passages in the Saginaw Bay watershed

Responsibilities: The successful applicant will join a team of Central Michigan University and Michigan State University researchers to address questions of fish movement patterns and changes in reproductive effort in relation to the replacement of dams with rock ramp fish passages within rivers in the Saginaw Bay watershed (Michigan, USA). The incumbent will participate in and help oversee all aspects of field work including crew supervision, fish egg and larval sampling, fish assemblage sampling via backpack and boat electroshocking, PIT tag installation and monitoring, and habitat assessment to name a few activities, in addition to subsequent data analysis and writing. Field work will take place from mid-March through August, thus applicants should be prepared for a wide range of weather and conditions. The incumbent will work primarily with Dr. Brent Murry, but also extensively with Drs. Galarowicz, Woolnaugh, and Uzarski, as well as Dr. Hayes from Michigan State. The successful applicant will be expected to develop his/her ms thesis within the scope of this project. Funding is for two and a half years with a competitive year round salary and full tuition waiver.

Desired start date is March 1, 2011.
Qualifications: The successful applicant should be highly motivated and
have a B.S. in biology, zoology, ecology, fisheries or closely related field with a GPA e 3.0 overall and in the major. Prospective students with prior field experience (e.g. boat and fish handling) and demonstrated interest in riverine fish and aquatic ecology are especially encouraged to apply.

MS Position, Biology Department- Central Michigan University- “Population Trajectory Improvement for At Risk Freshwater Mussels in the Great Lakes Watershed”




Responsibilities: The successful applicant will conduct a two-year research project on host fish determination and propagation of unionids in the Great Lakes Region. This project is funded by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service – Endangered Species Program). The MS student will combine field and laboratory (host fish testing and rearing) techniques to assist in propagating state and federally listed freshwater mussels. The successful applicant will work with Dr. Daelyn Woolnough (http://www.cst.cmich.../users/wooln1d/) and Dr. Dave Zanatta (http://www.cst.cmich.../users/zanat1d/) to answer questions about the conservation of these mussel communities, ultimately leading to a comprehensive thesis. Stipend support in the form of Research Assistantships will be available in the summers and Teaching and/or Research Assistantships will be available through the school year. Graduate students in Biology receive full tuition waivers.




Qualifications: The successful applicant should be highly motivated and have a B.S. (or completion by May 2010) in biology, zoology, ecology, aquaculture, fisheries or closely related field. Prior field experience (e.g, boats, snorkeling, SCUBA), interests in conservation biology, aquaculture, and working with fish, aquatic invertebrates and/or unionid mussels, are assets.

Minimum academic qualifications include 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 system) and GRE scores must be sent to CMU graduate school for approval.
