I really in love with the cyprinodon species found in California and neveda, but I'm aware of that it is hard or illegal to obtain any of these speces found in California so is their any cyprinodon species not native to califronia but be possible to find in commercially like the Elassoma species?

When i lived in texas as a young man we use to catch a fish named sheephead minnow it looked like a pupfish.
maybe you could find a member to trade you some.
please read over cali, laws there a more then a few rules in your state.

I'm not too familiar with pupfish but from what I've heard, they're mostly endangered or extinct. It might be possible that some sort of organization exists to keep pupfish alive in breeding programs in captivity, much like the CARES program that promotes the breeding of Lake Victorian cichlids in captivity that are extinct in the wild. Here's a link that discusses the C.A.R.E.S. program: http://www.cichlid.o...rvation_program In a brief google search just now I found the Desert Fishes Council, http://www.desertfishes.org/ , which may have more information.

You also mentioned Elassoma, of which most species aren't endangered. I breed Elassoma gilberti myself, and I see Elassoma frequently on aquabid. For example, here is an auction for Elassoma evergladei: http://www.aquabid.c...tive with more being found under the US Natives section of aquabid.com

Be sure to check with local regulations. I wouldn't be surprised if Sheepshead minnows are illegal to possess in California. If they're not, they should be. Most of the problems in TX with endemic pupfishes are due to hybridization with them. I'm not saying that you are the irresponsible party, but those fish should not be out there. All pupfish hybridize pretty regularly.

As far as I remember, Red River Pupfish aren't protected if you really want some...

Sailorv, here are a few links that you may find ok.
and please do read the link on california laws.
as for the sheephead minnow, all i know about them is this fish is a survivor for sure.
i found them in pools of fresh water with low oxygen and no other living fish.
to areas with salt so high in the water content it would kill other ocean fish, yet this little fish would live and breed.

as mention about elasomma. I already thinking about getting them from Jonah aquarium but it seem now that he doesn't have any in stock now...but... until i get the supplies for elassoma eevrgladei. In the mean time i will ask him if i can order some in advance when he has them in stock in the future.

i will look up at the law regulations.

Your not going to find Cyprinodon "commercially" (aside from Varigatus of which I'm not sure about legality in Cali) but there are still breeders out there with a few of the Mexican species and of C. macularius. I kept C. longidorsalis and C. macularius for as long as I could and spread them around so I know they are out there.
