Found two of these on my doorstep this afternoon. Awesome is a bad word. Beautiful and Awesome maybe. I am excited. They told me six inches but they seem a little bigger and much fatter than I expected. Saw only one before this and it was a baby at dredcons place in Louisiana. These rule. I like. Nice.

Thanks Sean. I did some more photos and cropped. Did some color correction also, this is more what he looks like. Awesome. Thanks again. I have two, imagine that. Oh and I cleaned the glass

Being new to grass pickerels do they stay in hiding or do they swim around to the front and stuff. One is starting to feel at home and swimming around, the other is still on the bottom in culture shock.
To clear something up I am speaking of the photo on the top post that I redid. Cropped and color corrected. Still is a bit yellow but this is more what the fish looks like than the first photo I had on that I removed.

They're not active swimmers. They sit still in the same place for a long time, unless you spook them. They are easily spooked, often just by turning on the light. Keep them well covered. Even though they sit still most of the time, when they are spooked, and of course when they strike at prey, you won't believe how fast they are! If you put several feeders in there, when it strikes one, the feeder will be gone before you know which feeder it took. They spend more time in the plants, but are not afraid to sit in the front of the tank either. They can be anywhere from colorless to brilliant, depending on their moods. I think you will be quite impressed with both the behavior and beauty of these fish. The redfin of course has red in its fins, and its pattern is brown. Unlike the redfin, the grass pickerel is all green. And while that may sound plain, it is anything but plain! The body and fins are a pale green unlike any green you have ever seen, especially when the fish is in a colorful mood. The pattern is such dark green, it almost looks black, but it is indeed green. A truly amazing fish! I could stare at it all day.

The sudden spurts can be dangerous. I had one years ago and after I turned on the room light early one dark morning the pickeral blasted into the end of the tank, sank to the bottom never to rise again. Maybe have a small light on a timer to gradually light up the room if your schedule or room doesn't allow for natural sunrise.

I've been around and come around. Never just turn lights on, on a aquarium. I wait for daylight then I open the curtains. Then I turn on a light on the other side of the room. I do this with time in-between each. Then I have a lamp next to the aquarium. I turn it on. Then finaly the lights on the tanks I turn on. But actually like someone mentioned about a little light. Like a little night light simulating the moon. It is a good idea to have this also so they do not bump into each other at night and do what that person said. Run into the side of the tank never to rise again.

You are totaly correct about the light. It is actually a good idea to have a night light simulating moon light. That keeps them from bumping into each other and running into the side of the tank never to rise again. My schedual does allow for me to wait for daylight though. I wait for that. Open the curtains. Then I turn on a light across the room. Then I turn on a lamp closer to the tanks, then I turn on the tank lights. I do this with a pause inbetween each.

If I am going overboard let me know. But I am using the save for web feature in Photoshop and these files are not large at all. When I capture something like this I cannot help but share. I love fish but my first love is photography. Hope you enjoy, and you gotta click on full size for the effect LOL

Look inside the mouth of this one and you get a true appreciation for the green-ness of these fish. And don't forget to take a close look at the body pattern. Incredible!
Yes and I was just looking at him again. When he opened his mouth it was opened a lot larger than this and you could see the gill rakers. WHAT A LARGE MOUTH WOW. I had my brother-in-law over last night and he teaches at a local university. He thinks they are awesome, and he wants one and said he would love one in his office. His wife said no LOL. It would take a bit of setting up and money and I do not think that will happen. He has a Beta and I think he should stay with what he knows. TEACHING ENGLISH LOL
And I am with you on the green color Ed. I love it. The snout on them is that light shade of green you keep telling me about. I can't wait till they feel sexy to see the whole body look like that.

Is there a way you can quote someone without the photo showing up over and over?? I am just getting started with these pickerel photos. I will set up my studio lights and take photos with much better light. I will let them feel more at home for a few days before I blast them with tungsten lighting though.

Welcome to the wonderful world my friend. I have to say my pickerel is my favorite fish to photograph. The pattern never ceases to amaze me... It is so intricate and colorful. My boy has really gotten some very good green and red in recently. He is getting big quick too. Are you going to try and get them on shrimp or pellets? Its a good challenge but well worth it. I am sure you will really enjoy these boys. They are fun. And be very careful with them they are really quick. Mine has a good little cut on his nose right now from running and jumping...
