I was wondering, How important are darters as forage fish for larger species such as trout and bass? I heard alot about shiners and shads role in forage, some things about madtoms as forage. But I never heard of whether or not darters play an important role as food for larger fish where they are common.

mostly shovelhead catfish.
on a side note
shovelhead catfish that end up as table fair we find have smaller catfish in stomach content more often then any other fish species of fish followed by crawfish.

Sculpins are the #1 piscine predator on darters. Basses of course will eat anything that fits in their mouths, but many darters live in habitats like riffles where there aren't lots of (big) bass.
