Well I've really been getting into Sunfish lately and am able to id most I catch fairly easily. But when it comes to hybrids I'm clueless. Only one I've really heard of is a Greengill.

I was wondering if any of you could fill me in on some common ones and hook me up with a picture if possible. Thanks.

Though I have no pictures of them around here pumpkingills are most common. Then again my state only has three lepomis.

i have no pictures of my local hybrids I have caught, but I have caught pumpkingills, greenmouths (warmouthxgreen sunny) and what I thought could have been longorangespot (long ear and orange spotted). I have this picture which I have always thought was a cross, but have no clue
To me, it has the mouth of either a green or warmouth, coloring of a pumpkinseed, but there are others that you could see some of in it.

CatfishTony,

Your picture of the Lepomis megalotis x Lempomis macrochirus is really interesting. Do you have any more pictures of that fish?

Those black pelvics on that first fish (in tony's post) are very curious to me... I know that L. punctatus males have those black pelvics during breeding season... but did not know that others had this characteristic... is that typical for bluegull or longear?

i only see black pelvic fins in male longear, in early spring to mid summer here in ohio.
some of my tank kept longears keep this color for months then it goes away with less light from near by window.
so would you say this is a hybrid for sure longear and bluegill?

Thanks for the pics and comments. I guess there are a lot of possible crosses out there I'll encounter. Thing is now I believe I'll be able to say something IS a hybrid.

Green x pumpkinseed hybrids are commmon in my area as well as with green x bluegills. Some of these hybrids may not be F1 cross as I have learned out that some hybrids I caught were cross back to the parent species. I did caught Bluegill x Pumpkinseed hybrids from time to time.

Just to add to the whole black pelvic fin thing - I've only seen this jet black fins on male redbreasts before. Of course Michael's latest pic of his spotted sunfish shows that redbreast aren't the only ones.

Cool thread. Over the last year I have snapped so many photos of the sunfishes I encounter mostly because I've noticed a difference between populations lately, AND there is actually more individual variation than I thought.

In all honesty, I have encountered minuscule amounts of hybrids on the river where I work (only catching two hybrids out of several hundreds of sunfish). This at first surprised me since there are six Lepomis species all living in the same river. But I realized that rivers are under way different pressures than ponds, and those pressures may explain why so many ponds have higher rate of capture for these hybrids.

Agree, very intriguing. Also I love how he's staring at your fingers and the hook thinking "errhem...what do you think you're doing with my mouth buddy?...You best be gettin this damn hook out."

Sandtiger thats some excellent pictures of a combo we dont have down here; I have some really bad pictures of some Longear/Green hybrids, those and Greengills are the only hybrids Ive seen around these parts.
