I bought these guys from someone who specializes in natives as E. gilberti. I'm trying to confirm that ID. The preopercular pores thing seems to be just about invisible, and where to start counting (what counts as one ray verses what counts as two because those bones branch), eludes me. Is there any other good way of telling, or can anyone explain it better? I've kept/bred okefenokee before and these do seem to have more blue, but if they did turn out to be okefenokee, I'd prefer something I haven't kept before as a summer breeding project.

I would ask the person you bought them from for locality data. That is the only way you will be able to tell for sure without a dissecting scope and/or running the DNA. If you got these from Jonah's, it is safe to say your fish is what it was sold as.
