Last saturday I had the day to myself so I thought I would take a little trip to the Green River. The Gilt Darter has long been on my list of KY fish to find. With a little help from a fellow NANFA member and Google street view, I headed down saturday with 3 access locations on the main Green and 4 access points to tribs to the green in the area. The weather was perfect and the river was beautiful. I only went to 2 locations on the main Green.

After a little bit uniseining, I realized I wouldn't see a Gilt this way and put on the snorkel. Time flies when your swimming with the fishes.

I ended up seeing about 7-8 Gilt Darters, and I only snorkeled in 2 runs. There were very curious fish and would come very close. However, seeing and catching are two very different things.

The Payoff: He was more colored up when I first caught him

I took a few vids of the fish too.

FujiFilm XP10. It's a great camera for the price.

Anyone want to take a stab at id'ing the fish in the videos?

to me it appears to be a spotfin, but that is just based on what I know of spotfin shiners :)

I agree, I think the Cyprinella is likely spiloptera but that is simply based on the fact that it is obviously a Cyprinella and spiloptera is the most common. My guess for the other schooling fish is Hybopsis amblops.

I'm nearly positive I saw a Streamline Chub (Erimystax dissimilis) schooling with the others, but I don't think I got it in the video.

This is the headwaters area of the Green, correct? I think the best way to get a good sampling done on the Green River would be to float a canoe for a 5-7 mile stretch with lots of riffles. Get out on the shell bars to wade and sample then float (and throw some baits) to the next area.

On my canoe trip in the Munfordville area last year, I saw lots of great sampling sites between pools at the riffles that would be inaccessible on foot.

No, this is the Lower Green, in Greensburg KY, south of Campbellsville. I guess it's called the lower, it's below Green River Lake.

Ok, looked awful shallow to be below the dam. I've never been that far upstream so I didn't know. I'd call it middle Green. West of Munfordville, as it flows into Mammoth Cave Park, it gets deeper with much fewer riffles and onto the locks from there.
