The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alabama in Huntsville invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position. Exceptionally well qualified applicants may be considered at the associate professor rank. Successful candidates must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline and will be expected to obtain extramural research funds, to teach and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and to participate in the interdisciplinary Biotechnology Science and Engineering Ph.D. program. Teaching is an essential part of the mission of the department and the successful candidate will be qualified to teach human/animal physiology and anatomy, and other related areas such as kinesiology, neuroscience or advanced topics related to their research. Applicants with research interests in physiology at the molecular, cellular or organismal level are a priority. Research groups at UAHuntsville and the nearby HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology have interests that include genetics, genomics and proteomics, systems biology, structural biology, and human performance. Candidates who anticipate productive interactions with one or more of these groups are especially encouraged to apply. There is also opportunity to participate in the development of the newly established Human Performance Lab at UAH. The Department of Biological Sciences is housed in the Shelby Center for Science and Technology with modern, spacious, well-equipped teaching and research facilities. Huntsville, a mid-sized city in northern Alabama, is home to several universities, the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, the Redstone Arsenal, Cumming's Research Park, and more than a dozen biotechnology companies. The area boasts a reasonable cost of living and ample recreational and cultural opportunities. Please visit the departmental web site, www.uah.edu/biology, to learn more about the department and the area. The starting date for the position is August 2012. Applicants should send ONE .pdf document containing a cover letter, C.V., research statement, statement of teaching interests and teaching philosophy, and contact information for three letters of recommendation, including name, address, phone number and email, to Dr. Bruce Stallsmith, Search Committee Chair, at biops@uah.edu. Review of applications will begin December 1, 2011 and will continue until the position is filled. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.
