Hi everyone,

I'd really appreciate it if someone could postiviely I.D. this juvenile sunfish. On the rare occasion when they are available in the UK its usually pumpkinseed, but these seem much redder than pumpkinseeds (although the LEDs on my aquarium make it look bluer in the photo than in real life) and the closest match I can find is the young longear in Brian Zimmerman's photo album: http://gallery.nanfa... by BZ.jpg.html
As I need to be licensed to keep them in the UK I'd like to speciate them reasonably reliably.
Thanks.
PS: needless to say assistant in LFS not much help - didn't know and suggested I 'google' it.

Maybe a longear or redbreast? Any clues where it came from?

None. I'm guessing European bred, maybe Czech Republic or Germany. Was labelled as 'sunfish' and assistant in shop had no idea.

Looks like a young longear to me.

If I caught that locally, I would surely guess that it was a longear. I have seen very few pumpkin seed juveniles.

I don't have experience with longears but it very much resembles juvenile redbreast sunfish I see around here all the time.

I've got to go with longear as well. The margin on the ear tab seems to be white(ish), and the juvenile redbreast tend to have pale orange spots on their sides, and the blue pattern on the face looks more longear to redbreast to me. Just my 2 cents.

I have a juvenile Longear in my 55 gallon tank the same size as you are showing and that is exactly what it looks like.

it definately is not a juvie p=seed. I have been catching tons of them lately. It does resemble a long ear juvie to me as well.

I do not see the brown spotting that shows up in juvie p=seeds (have seen this spoting on fish as small as 1", and this fish in question seems bigger than that.)

Thanks to everone who has replied. I guess balance of opinion to date is that it's a juvenile longear. It seems that Aquarium Glaser in Germany were stocking Taiwanese-bred longears last year: http://www.aquariumg...is_en_1223.html

As you can see the hope/likelyhood of a type locality is sadly very slim! Still, they're pretty neat.
