I never trust myself to remember all the scale and ray counts for the different redhorse species, so I made myself a cheat sheet to keep with my fishing tackle. Then I went a little overboard and made it colorful and fancy.
It's available (FREE) in color or b&w, full page or wallet sizes, from http://moxostoma.com.
(It only has the 6 most common--at least in my region--species: river, greater, shorthead, black, golden, silver. I'd love to do more if I ever have time.)
The site will eventually also have pages for all the species of moxostoma about which I can find adequate info, images, etc., range maps, lots of photos, and a huge bibliography of scientific and popular sources (papers, books, sites, etc.) when I find the time to type it all in.
Please check it out and download the ID sheets if you think they might be useful.
Thanks,
Olaf

Here's a jpg of the ID sheets, but you'll have to go to the site for the PDFs.

I'll never run by those fish, but I love the cheat sheet. You just gave me a great idea for a much more amateurish key I might for local darters and minnows... That grahic is really sharp and well designed. You put together a beautiful thing there.

Just giving this topic a bump since it's sucker spawning season all over the place right now. Shouldn't be, but it is. Go to my site and download the cheat sheets, then get out there and see which redhorse are doing what to each other!
If you catch anything cool (in a seine or on a hook), let me know. Send me photos and a report of where, when, temps (air and water), etc. If you don't mind and it's good info/images, I'll put it on my site.

I tied up a bunch of flies that I'm confident will be great for suckers, and I was all set to get out for some redhorse observation and fishing this week. One of my kids fell and broke her arm, though. She's doing better, but is home from school and I can't abandon a five-year-old to hit the rivers. I'd take her along, but the cast has to stay dry and I don't trust gravity next to water.
This season's so weird that I might be missing spawning of several species that usually don't get going until mid-late April.

Just click the link in my signature to get to the cheat sheets.

Wow! How did I miss this? Those cheat sheets are superb. I must admit that Moxostoma is one genus of natives that I still don't have down.... this should help! I usually go off overall gestalt and mouth, but that often leads me to a putative ID (especially juveniles).

If I ever get any residual cash, I'll be sure to order one of those fine, high quality prints on your website. Now we need one for Ictiobus!

I need to build a bigger photo tank to start photographing some adult suckers! Thanks a lot for posting this here and for free. I can tell a lot of work went into these.

Thanks!
I've been working on an Ictiobus print, but mostly in my mind. I wish they had more sharply differentiated features I could play with. Constantly reading things like "scale counts are of little use" is a bit discouraging.
Definitely going to do one for Carpiodes, though. Might combine them with Ictiobus.
Thanks again for the kind words. I didn't even see there'd been a reply until today, almost a month later.
