Freeze dried food doesn't work for bottom feeders. Freeze dried floats while frozen cubes, once thawed, sinks. You'll be wanting the sinking kind for your madtom. That 30 cube product I linked to earlier is $5 at my local Petsmart.I use freeze dried blood worms and crush them in my hand before throwing them in for the small fish.
I bought my planting tweezers for $6 total including shipping off of ebay, so if you want a pair they're very inexpensive. At $6 they kind of out-compete whatever one could build oneself.I have often thought of inventing something that would push the dirt/gravel away forming a small bowl then inserts the plant to the bottom of the hole and then covers the spread earth/gravel back without disturbing the plant. I can picture it in my mind but have not tried to build it.
