I understand your pain. It's always awful losing a fish, especially when there's nothing you could do.

I dont want to pick on you, cause sometimes there is nothing you can do... but greens are tough fish...if you only turned for a minute... and then found him on the floor... put him back in the tank... even run him through the water manually for a few minutes to move water over his gills... I had a blacknose dace that my daughter called the "lint fish" cause we found him on the floor... covered in lint and such... and although it took him two days to fully recovered, he lived for another year or so before he took another jump and we found him too late...

Seriously, I thought I lost a fish once and looked everywhere... and he showed up three days later... I can't figure out where he hid... or why...

I bet the water got foul in the temporary tank and he jumped ship because he was uncomfortable. If you have an ammonia test kit or feel like taking a sample of the water to a pet store for testing, that might solve the mystery of his motivation for jumping. Usually the reason why a fish that's used to captivity jumps is because the water is making them uncomfortable.

Maybe he just went to get a bite to eat.
