This is a bullhead collected from a small pond / wetland area in extreme SE Oklahoma along the Red River and near the TX and AR borders. Other species typical of the area include fliers, bowfin and banded pygmy sunfish.
I originally thought it to be the much more common black bullhead, but other's have suggested it might be a brown. Brown bullheads are known from this area, but are much less common than the black bullhead.
The fish was even more mottled when fresh and the pectorals were serrated. The fish was released (though I now wish I had kept it). Thanks in advance for any comments.

That's a black bullhead. Notice the " ( " (or bar) before the tail, that's the telltale sign of one, brown's don't have it.

I second the previous comment, that void of dark pigment at the base of the tail is a good indicator of it being a black and not a brown bullhead.
