Hi everyone,
Been away from the forum for a few months over winter so I hope I didn't miss too much...
This year I am desperately wanting to try and spawn my 4 precious, irreplacable redsides. Already one, which I assume to be a female, is becoming noticably heavier in the belly than the other three.
However, after long searching I can find no direct information on aquarium spawning of this species, only observation of fish in the wild. Has anyone here actually spawned them in captivity and if so, could you describe in detail your set-up and fry raising methods? Mine have spent the winter outdoors in an unheated fish house and here in the UK, air temperatures are just now begining to rise

I have not tank-spawned Clinostomus, but they are chub-nest spawners, so I'd suggest putting a shallow container of smooth, round pea-gravel under the filter return chute or pipe to simulate a chub nest. Current is necessary to get some water movement under the gravel so the eggs don't suffocate. This method works well with other chub-nest associate minnows.

I have not spawned redsides either, but I did find this article on spawning rosysides, their sister species of the Clinostomus genus. They're quite similar, and both chub nest spawners.

Thanks for your input guys. Looks like aquarium spawnings of redsides are a rare event so I will indeed post my results, positive or negative. Gerald, the method you describe has worked great for me in spawning rainbow shiners so I'll try the same setup here.
