I caught this fish in Elkhorn Creek in Kentucky. The creek flows into the Kentucky River. The fish was in calm water about 5ft. deep. I'm sure this is a common fish but I have not caught one before. any help would be appreciated. thanks

I would guess that you caught a Mooneye. Nice! And where I am from that is not that common.

Looks like 11-ish dorsal rays (kind of fuzzy) so I agree with Skipjack; the fish you have there is a Mooneye. Apparantly, they taste good smoked - they are close relatives to the herrings and anchovies. They appear to be widespread in Kentucky, but I've fished long hours in lakes that supposedly contain them here and have failed to catch any. Kudos to you!

What area of Elkhorn did you catch it in?

It was on the main branch, probably 2-3 miles from the kentucky river.
