another video of the culture. the green water has been cleared, so i fed them more last night. twelve hours later the water is clear again.
up near the top of the culture you can see small white fuzzy specks that almost look like a cloud. its all baby daphnids.

well, i learned a lesson today: dont put a light, even a compact florescent, on the side of a daphnid tank. i put a light on the side so that i could see them better from above and forgot about it... when i came back several hours later, nearly all of the adult daphnids(and probably many larvae) were dead at the bottom of the tank on the side the light was on. i have no idea if it was the heat that killed them or what, but im chalking this one up to lessons learned. the culture is still quite viable and there is much more in it than what i started with, so it should snap right back.

Hi Auban,
This is a good one:

What kind of ostracods do you raise?
Cheers,

i just ordered a copy. hopefully, i will be able to ID the six or so cultures i have going on right now. i also ordered a copy of the third edition of Wetzels "Limnology, lake and river ecosystems", so i may be a bit busy reading for the next few days... or months.
