Is this a female Orangethroat Darter, or a Banded Darter? It was caught in Northwest Indiana in a feeder creek to the Kankakee River.
"Nature Serve fish by water shed" says both are in the river.

Here is a photo of one of my own female Etheostoma spectabile (orange throat darters). Yours doesn't really look like mine but I'm no expert. That could even be a male in my photo. But I think it's a female.

I would guess a poor looking rainbow. Guessing that mainstem Kank is large for spectabile.

Ooops. missed the feeder creek part. Could be either.

Mike,
It could be either.
In my experience, Orangethroats are increasingly harder to find as you head to the Indiana border. I have never found them in ditches along the state line. You have to go pretty far downstream in the Kankakee valley before you'll find any orangethroats.
Ironically, it's not uncommon to find Rainbows in very small ditches and streams where you'd expect orangethroats. This spring, I photographed several rainbows from this portion of the Kankakee. You can hop over these tiny tribs that hold rainbows.
