Could I get some help IDing this shiner from the Saline Branch of the Salt Fork Creek in Urbana, IL? Thanks ahead of time for the help! The fish was released unharmed after the photo was taken. The two photos are of the same fish.

I'm not familiar with the area, but that fish looks like a striped shiner Luxilus chrysocephalus to me. Stout fish, and big mouth.

Thanks UncleWillie. That stream is full of striped shiners, but I had never seen a small one. I'm used to seeing much bigger ones, so I didn't make the connection!

Stripes always look like commons to me. (on a rare occasion you'd see a striped with darket shade on the sides, but usually they have the same body shape).
