So i was in my lfs, picking up some cichlids(keep in mind this is in nj) when i stumbled across a tank labeled bantam sunfish for $14.99. Is that a good deal? I bought one because they are apparently very rare in nj.

It's not beyond the realm of possibility to conclude that you might have been looking at a large % of the population of Bantams in the state of NJ when you saw that tank.. They're not native to the eastern seaboard and are not one of the "weedy" species of Lepomis that occur extensively outside of their natural ranges other than because of the floods along the Mississippi a few years back. Likely they're tank raised. The price isn't unreasonable.

Jonah sells sunfish for a comparable price as does Sachs

these guys are trustworth, at least in my opinion, so your price is not bad, and like Subrose says they are a less common species.

Bantams are not as colorful as some, but don't get as big either and are considered by some to be a rather desirable species.
