Caught this sunfish in NJ. Tossed him back but not without getting some pics!!! What do you think he is?

Either a Blue Spot or a Banded. I can't tell which from that pic.

Banded. I looked up banded and it matched it perfectly. Thanks subrosa!

I woulda guessed bluespotted, but they can be tricky to separate.

Those Jersey ones threw you a bit of a curve if I recall correctly, didn't they Gerald?

I would vote for Bluespotted based on the face. That mouth looks a *little* small for a banded, but especially at that size they are VERY tricky.

I think it's a bluespot too. Don't let the thin "bands" on a juvenile bluespot fool you. Just because it has some irregular bands does not mean it's a banded.

Yup - what threw me off in NJ was red-orange on the anal fin of NJ obesus. From my limited experience with obesus in the Carolinas, they don't have red-orange on the anal, which gloriosus often does. Best field indicators IMO are the iridescent marks under the eye (round dots or very short dashes in gloriosus, vs long dashes in obesus) and head/mouth shape (head blunter and mouth angle steeper in obesus).

Those Jersey ones threw you a bit of a curve if I recall correctly, didn't they Gerald?
