I wasn't really sure where to put this, so I decided to put it in 'advanced captive care'. This is purely to satisfy my curiosity, but can people try to list off fish which can be kept in a breeding colony setup in a 30 gallon?

Are you wanting to do only one species, or mix several species together?

By 'colony tank', I mean only a single species of fish in the tank.

Here's my list.
  • Heterandria formosa (wild type and gold color morph)
  • Gambusia affinis, holbrooki
  • Elassoma gilberti, okefenokee, zonatum, evergladei
  • Leptolucania ommata
The problem is that you narrowed it down to 1 30 gallon tank. If you had 3 10 gallon tanks you could include a lot of darters and shiners, too, as you rotate them from tank to tank so they don't eat their own young. Here is a post on breeding lucania goodei in that manner: http://forum.nanfa.o...lucania-goodei/ (see post #5 for a tank setup picture)

Hmmm...might the tank divider be as useful as having several tanks?
