I agree with Ben's descriptions above........eye color/striations on the cheeks, etc. Additionally, a big give away is how far the jaw extends towards the eye when the jaw is closed. In smallmouths the "corner" of the mouth will not go past the eye. In largemouths it will. Obviously this won't work in Ben's photos.

Sandy Creek...that's the one that tried to drown me while we were looking for River and Black Redhorse, right? ](http://forum.nanfa.org/public/style_emoticons/default/eusa_wall.gif)
Love the darters from that stream! I want to try it again...maybe this time I'll come with some water wings...
Red Shiner, Mud Darter and Banded Darter would make me very happy.
When? I don't know...

Haha, Ken that was Salt Fork Creek by Urbana. Sandy creek is much easier to wade, less than 12 inches in most places. It has unexpectedly deep holes though, some over 6 feet deep. Good fishing spot for a bunch of species, but I haven't had any luck with suckermouth minnow, mud darter, or banded darter.

I think I sampled Sandy Creek in 2007 (down near the bottom of the page):
