The title is mostly self-descriptive, but I will elaborate a little. I am currently trying to find 'red' fish options for a probably 20 gallon long Florida biotope I am considering making in the future, with pygmy sunfish and pygmy killifish as the other inhabitants. The question is, will the fish get along? My main worry is that the darters might be just large enough to eat either of the other two species. Are those concerns valid?
Etheostoma edwini (brown darter) with pygmy sunfish?

I don't think that the E. edwini would be able to eat the adults of the Elasomma or Leptolucania, but you would certainly not get any breeding of either in the presence of the darter. But I can tell you from experience, that within a year or two the Elasomma and Leptolucania will die out (just form old age, they don't live that long).

I agree with Michael. A nonbreeding population will soon die out and you'll have no fish.
If you have a spare tank to put the pygmy sunfish in for a month, you can get them to spawn there and then remove all the adults to the 20 gallon display tank. The eggs will hatch and the babies will grow up alone. Then when they're big enough, you take them out and put two pairs of the adults from the display tank in there again. Multiple tanks is a good way to both generate fry and have your display tank.

Yeah, that was the idea...so, it will be safe as long as you have another container to breed the fry in? Good. Thank you.

I like the idea of this kind of tank. As long as you're breeding some of the fish in other tanks, I would also consider Heterandria formosa, Lucania goodei, and Pteronotropis signipinnis (or similar Pteronotropis).
