I started with 4, 3 dissappeared and 1 jumped. This is in my 45 gallon with a Lid on the tank. I have 3 bluegill at 5-6in, 1 6in longear, 1 5in florida brown bullhead, and other fish that are aroung 3in that are sunfish. I honestly do not know where they went. They all were eating food to the point they would steal some from other fish. they were around 3-4in.

I want to get more, but all I have is a 30 gallon they could be in if I got any. I could not put them in my 45 because I have 2 smb at 3in that are going to be in my 180 gallon when I upgrade this year, hopefully soon.

Have any reasons why they disappeared? this happend before I had my 2 smb.

Ask the Bullhead, he knows.

any fish <4" should be very nervous in a tank with a 5" bullhead

The smallest dimension on the smallest fish needs to be a good bit bigger than the width of a Catfish's mouth or a repeat is inevitable.

Never trust a catfish!

That's 100% wrong! You can always trust a Catfish to eat anything that moves and fits in its mouth! And actually a lack of movement isn't a deal breaker either!

would a 5in-6in creek chub work? When I ordered the creek chubs and I said 3-4in, I was actually suprised how small they were. so I knew something would happen, I just didn't know it was the catfish at first since the longear always chased them.

Predators will make chubs jump, even before entering the water if they see them.

I was once dumping a bucket with a small fallfish into my big tank (back when it had my big fish in it), and a eight inch big blue gill was below it. Needless to say the fallfish tried jumping out of the bucket, hit his head on the tank rim, and fell in, He swam aroundn a panic and later I found half his body next to the big bullhead.

Chubs are a little jump prone anyways (do they jump to navigate narrow streams like dace do?) but a hungry predator magnifies this,

The length of a fish has little bearing on whether or not a catfish eats it. I've seen many predatory fish swim around with a tail hanging out of their mouths. Diameter is the critical measurement here.

Im supprised I still have my 3in warmouth sunfish then. The catfish never bothers him and the warmouth has been in there since around last summer. So Im guessing the 20, or 30 gallon would not work for the creek chubs since their size. Also I have fathead minnows, hogchoker flounders, a goby of some species, and a eastern musminnow in the 20. I could set up my 30 though for them. Ive had luck in my 20 since the only fish that jumped was my 3in fathead who I put back in right as he jumped out since I was 5ft away. The 30 has nothing in it, but both the 20 and 30 have no lid on them. I can use my 45 until I get my 180 gallon, then I have to take down the 45. I do not think putting them in the 20 would work out for the others.

You're not getting it. A 3" warmouth is 3" long and probably close to 3" in diameter. A 6" Chub is about an inch, maybe 1.5" in diameter. Add the fact that the Warmouth is a fish with lots of spiny fins and it's understandable why the catfish leaves it alone.

Ok, thank you for the awnser. what about the tank size needed for one? If it can go in the 30, then I could get 3 for them to form a group. My 20 and 30 gallon tanks are about a foot wide.

That's a good point Josh, I assume that they do jump... either that or they swim upstream like crazy when they are tiny fry... cause I have seen some 3-4 inch creek chubs in a stream 8 inches wide and 1 inch deep... they are definitely headwaters fish... I don't know anything about fallfish other than that they seem to be the yankee similar... but yes, creek chubs are making their way upstream all the way to the seep.

I scared one of my 5-6" creek chubs when I was trying to clean the lid of my 75 in my office at work and he jumped out of the tank and came close to hitting the 12' ceiling. It was insane. Not to mention I had to change shorts afterwards.

What about if I have a dwarf water lily and some java ferns in the 30 with it? will it still jump? I will also try to have a powerhead in there for a little bit of current and have T-5 bulbs on it. Also how can I turn on lights without the chub getting scared and jumping if the light will instantly on instead of turning on slowly? My other concern is the filter. Would the chub try to "swim upstream" where the filter is?
