Bruce - ditto on the castnet. Some guys make it look so easy. Maybe I started with one that was too big. There are videos on youtube - I watched them. I still can't throw the thing worth a damn.

Still, I managed to snag enough gar and bowfin to stock the Tank O' Death and my pond.

One hang up (pun intended) with cast nets is the snags. If you have a nice open area to throw in, no biggie, but if you are throwing in murky unknown water, be ready to rip it to shreds.

The smallest cast net I could find without getting a custom job was a 5' 1/4 mesh net from basspro.

Jonah's perfect dipnet... Jonah's Aquarium... he is a NANFA member and an all around good guy


I snapped the handle on my Perfect Dipnet, with only 0.1 inches of aluminum holding the pieces together. Gee, it only lasted 12 years.

Depending on the area and situation my suggestion may not be effective but,

i would suggest using a minnow seine, a dip net and minnow traps (even bottle minnow traps will do)
