Right now I have 2 18" bulbs putting out 600 lumens each for about 10 hours and day. I plan on building a 4 foot long light fixture this week to add to that.

1200 lumens? Is it a 10 gallon tank?

Edit: Oh, okay, I see your edit. The "I plan on building a 4 foot long light fixture this week to add to that." was added after I commented. How many gallons is the tank? And what is your substrate, again? The hard part with plant filtration is that the plants have to actively grow. If they wilt and die away, they're not filtering the water.

My aquarium is a 55. But I'm changing it up a bit top add some above water decor so it will only have about 30 to 35 gallons in it.

Ammonia is finally starting to come down with the addition of the plants. I tested it today and I am at 0.25ppm ammonia, 0 nitrite and 20ppm nitrate. Thanks for all of the help.
