Hey folks, resetting a custom drilled 30 gallon tank using the Walstad method with locally collected plants. The tank is a paludarium style tank, so water volume is pretty shallow, say 3" on average. After reading through the spring issue of the American Currents magazine, I'm curious about some of the other darter types. I've kept and am currently keeping Swamp darters, but interested in some of the more colorful varieties and your thoughts on suitability for this set-up. The tank is unheated and filtration is provided by a ZooMed 501 canister filter.

Would appreciate any thoughts on suitability of this system for darters and possible other tank mates.

TIA

Many of the common and widespread darters like Rainbows or various Snubnoses would be OK in such a system, especially if it has some variation like faster vs. slower flow areas.

Thanks fundulus, the ZooMed actually provides a pretty decent flow rate, and there are plenty of slower areas as well.

This gives you an idea of the flow;

and the water column without substrate;
