Are rock bass cared for the same as other sunfish? I want to get one, but I'm not sure about if they have special requirements.

also if anyone here has them nearby, I will be willing to buy some. Just do not collect them yet, I need to see if I will be able to buy one first. PM me if you are able to. sorry if this is in the wrong section

I don't keep rock bass but from what I've heard from others they're extremely territorial and don't do well with oer tankmates unless in a pretty large tank, they also tend to hide under rocks (of course!) very often. That's just what I've heard and I have no direct experience with Ambloplites species as of yet. I'd love to get one myself for the 180 native Im setting up but I'm afraid it's murder my catfish and sucker.

I had a rock bass, it was less aggressive than my pumpkinseed and dollar I had him with, He didn't maul any fish but would eat those who can fit in his mouth the same as any other fish. (their mouth is bigger than you'd think).

Nothing as insulting as feeding your fish and see the rock bass eat a minnow and not the food. That's just plain rude.

Rock bass young didnt adapt to flake or pellet food for me. They are attractively marked when young but become more bland as they age.

My wife kept one in a 30 gallon aquarium for several years while she worked at the Illinois Natural History Survey. He grew from a couple of inches to over a foot long. He was always the only fish in the tank and was only fed pelleted food from other labs, probably trout chow. He usually hid from me, but followed her and others in the lab, showing personality like a green sunfish or an oscar.
