I am going to set up a 75 gallon creek chub aquarium for my fish room. How many should I put into the 75 and what would be a good tankmate for them? What would you recommend for substrate and hiding spots that make it look like their natural habitat? Thank you for the help.

Edit: The reason I'm setting this tank up is so the 2 creek chubs I have in my 150 have their own space

If you want only creek chubs then I'd do 8-10 fish. If you want a tankmate then 6-8 fish and a stonecat or yellow bullhead. They grow very large averaging 10-14" although I've caught one that was 15.25" in my local creek. I currently am growing out a trio of 6-7" ones with a 4.5" female green sunfish in a 30 long and it's rediculous how fast they foul the water. Be sure to keep up with 50% weekly WCs to keep them healthy. I'd do a sand or loose gravel substrate wig some larger river rocks, some driftwood, and maybe some plants like jungle val if I had any talent at growing them.

Agree that a similar sized bullhead can be a good tank mate. Creek chubs are great looking fish once they get up to five or six inches.

A sunfish might work too. Maybe a single redbreast.

If you mean smallest number to form a school then I'd say 4-6 fish. Mine are doing just fine in a group of three but they don't really school tightly.

sorry for the confusion. I meant to say how small can each individual be? I do not want to get 4in creek chubs and have them not school with my 6-7in chubs.

Holy cow! I have caught some big creek chubs, but that is huge. You should have submitted it for a state record.

It probably would've been but sadly PA doesn't keep track of creek chub records or many other non game fish for that matter.

Ohio does not either. But once you submit a fish they create the category. May be the same there.

I don't think that will be much of a problem as long as 4" ones done fit in the mouth of the 7" ones... cause if it fits, it ships.  Otherwise they will hang out together... especially if they are the only minnow in the tank.
