So, in tandem with my other post (http://forum.nanfa.o...rs/#entry128717), I'd like to know how herbivorous these guys are. I have a decent amount of diatom and strand/hair algae growth in my aquarium, but once they chew through that (will they?) should I continue to supply them with algae? I can get lots out of my garden pond, but I don't know necessary it is. Also, I guess I figured wrong in assuming that an algae grazing fish would be a little more sedate but these guys seem to love movement. Do they need a lot of food to compensate for their activity? I generally feed fish only once a day, I think hungry fish are healthier, but I've never had super active fish like minnows before so that may need to change. Thoughts?

Stonerollers are extremely herbivorous, if you ever dissected one you would find an extremely long intestines loaded with nasty greenish ooze (algaes). They'll eat various worms that they find, but they really need greens, preferably living and attached to a rock. I've only kept them once, so hopefully others have a fuller answer.

mine ate algae, blood worms, earthworms, tilapia, and just about anything I'd put in the tank with them.

Mine eat just about anything I put it.

Also, couldn't this thread just been added to the other one you made?

Eh it was in the gallery. Since this is about care for a specific species, I figured it should be separate.

Good to hear that they're not picky. I knew I wanted a pair of them so I've been intentionally leaving algae to grow here and there so hopefully they'll have enough to graze on on top of regular feedings.

I read on some sources online that they eat blue green algae?? Is this true? I didn't think there were any fish species that ate it since it's a bacteria and not a plant or an algae. Anyone ever witnessed that?

I only have green algae growing on the side of my 40B mine was in, and I'd see him picking at that pretty frequently, that is until he discovered I was a source of much tastier food haha, he stopped eating the algae for the most part and would wait for bloodworms instead lol.

Mine eats algae wafers, frozen spirulina, algae growing on rocks, bloodworms, mysis shrimp, krill, and daphnia. I spoil him :).

One of them figured out hikari pellets taste good last night finally, but I have yet to see them eating algae at all so maybe they won't be so great for controlling it. Who knows. Good to hear some different responses though.
